One Object, Many Views

I recently just moved into a new apartment in Burlington, VT. My parents came up to help me move in and my mom left me with this fern. It is sitting in a planter that my great-grandfather made with his bare hands. I never met my great-grandfather because he passed away a few days before I was born but I knew that he was extremely talented. My mom brought the planter and the fern for decoration and a memory. I chose to use this as my object because it is a beautiful piece and it has a lot of potential to be photographed.

  1. Gorgeous fern, I love that it's in a planter of your grandmothers! I really like the shot from below, it gives it good like and makes it look bigger then it is.

  2. Nice work on these. I am really psyched to see all of the different angles that you used to photograph this plant. I would suggest looking at number five and number six as really good photographs. In number five, you have isolated the bottles, the plant, the window frame on the wall together in such a way that they create their own balanced composition. It has great lighting and depth. Number six, the plant stand leg, I think is absolutely gorgeous. It is simple, yet has all of the elements that make a great photograph. The composition, good color and lighting. The only change I might make to this is to either crop out the angled piece of the top or put a little more in.

  3. Great job on the pictures. I enjoy taking pictures of flowers as well. I love the close up picture of the fern and the detail.

  4. I really enjoy the close ups of the fern, they show the leaves in a great degree of detail and the shadows inside of the fern which gives it a feeling of depth. I would say that the shots you have that silhouette the fern would look better if the fern was in between you and the sun so it would show more of the silhouette.

  5. I really liked picture number 3 and 7. In the third picture, I liked how close and detailed the ferns are and in the seventh I like the shot from down below looking up at all the ferns hanging over the pot.

  6. I really liked the last photo. The way you captured the light on the leaves but also gave a sense of depth makes the photo much more interesting. Its simple but kind of chaotic as well, if that makes any sense.

  7. I think I agree with Kevin on my favorites - Number 5 does a great job of presenting all the elements together, and the abstraction of the leg by itself is just beautiful.
